ABOUT
PortsToronto presents Sail-In Cinema™, the world’s first two-sided floating movie experience of its kind.
In August, Canada’s Sugar Beach will transform into Toronto’s largest outdoor movie theatre over three nights. Movies will be shown under the open skies on a two-sided screen set atop a barge in Toronto Harbour. You can watch movies for free from Sugar Beach or Lake Ontario, and this year there are no tickets required to attend.
Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. each night with the film starting at approximately 8:45 p.m.
If you’ve got your sea legs, you can come to the movies by boat and drop anchor.
If you’re a landlubber, bring a chair, a cushion or a picnic blanket.
Think Sail-In Cinema™ sounds like an awesome event? You’re not the only one. Sail-In Cinema™ won Gold at Marketing Magazine’s Marketing Awards for best Experiential/Stunts/Events initiative of 2011 as well as Silver for best in Commercial Services at the Media Innovation Awards and a Certificate of Merit for advertising from The Advertising & Design Club of Canada in 2012. In 2016, Sail-In Cinema won an international award from the International Association of Business Communicators (also known as the Gold Quill Awards) in the Special Events category.
The inaugural Sail-In Cinema™ was held in 2011 to mark PortsToronto centennial year. Last year the event attracted more than 11,000 people on land and 100 boats over the three-day period. Sail-In Cinema™ is now a permanent fixture on Toronto’s summer calendar.
While Sail-In Cinema is a free event, there is limited seating on the landside and entry is subject to availability of space. Boat mooring will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Non-stop activities, food and entertainment will once again be offered by event sponsors prior to the start of each night’s feature film to provide a full evening of fun for all ages.
